Samsung will launch a new “edged” phone soon enough

Last year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Edge smartphone, which, unlike any other handsets we’d seen before, had a secondary, curved display on the side. So naturally, this year we expect to see the Korean tech giant unveil the Galaxy Note 5 and another “edge” phone, coming with S Pen functionality.

But a new report coming out of Italian publication HDBlog points towards a slightly different scenario.

At some point, we told you that Samsung was using internally the codename Project Zen for the successor of the Note Edge, after which it renamed it to Project Zero 2.

Well, today, we bring you more details about Project Zero 2 and its fate in this world. Apparently, the phone is not actually going to be a successor of the Galaxy Note Edge, but of the Galaxy S6 edge which saw the light of day in March at MWC 2015 in Barcelona.

Project Zero 2 coming sooner than expected

Contrary to what previous rumors have said, Project Zero 2 will not arrive with S Pen functionality, and the handset will not be launched at IFA 2015 in September, as it was anticipated until now.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Project Zero 2 will launch as the Galaxy S6 Plus and will be announced by the producing company in the upcoming weeks.

The Galaxy S6 Plus is poised to arrive with a 5.4-inch or 5.5-inch Super AMOLED dual-edged display and a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor in tow. The phone will also offer the services of a 16MP rear camera, a 5MP frontal snapper and 32GB of internal storage.

The internals seem pretty similar to what the Galaxy S6 edge offers, except that there’s no Exynos 7420 here to drive all the processes on board.

So we have to assume that the Samsung Galaxy S6 Plus will be a little more affordable than the Galaxy S6 edge. Or maybe due to its more spacious display its price will be on par with the current edge model (the Galaxy S6 edge has a 5.1-inch screen).

We’re just speculating at this point, but if the current report is correct, we’re going to see the Galaxy S6 Plus in all its glory in just a few weeks. Stay tuned.
