14 DAY TRIAL // Another day, another report on the features and capabilities of a yet unannounced Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone has emerged online, this time suggesting that the phone would arrive on shelves with a PLS LCD display.
The info comes from ET News and suggests that the South Korean mobile phone maker could use the same screen for another flagship smartphone set to become official next year, namely the Galaxy Note 4.
Apparently, Samsung’s decision on this has been influenced by the fact that this move would allow it to reduce production costs by almost 20 percent.
The handset vendor has already launched products with PLS LCD screens, such as the Nexus 10 and the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet PCs, but it has never used the technology inside smartphones before.
As SamMobile notes, the inclusion of LCD screens in handsets would result in more natural colors being displayed, as well as in less battery drain when browsing the web or performing some other similar actions.
However, Galaxy Note 3’s screen is seen as one of the best AMOLED panels out there, offering almost the same capabilities as LCD displays, while also keeping all the benefits that OLED comes with, such as true blacks.
The decision to move to LCD screens could impact sales of new Galaxy devices, as AMOLED has been one of the main selling points of these handsets until now.
Chances are that the rumor will prove false in the end, especially given that Samsung has already confirmed its ability to build Super AMOLED panels that can deliver a 2k resolution.
On the other hand, this is not the first time that rumors on Samsung planning on moving away from AMOLED emerge, which suggests that something might indeed be cooking in the company’s labs.
With no official confirmation on the matter, however, we’ll have to take this with a grain of salt for the time being. More should emerge on this sooner rather than later, so stay tuned to learn the news.
