The first smartphone to sport an incredible 2K display that supports 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution, the Vivo Xplay 3S, has yet to be launched on the market.

However, it appears that the Chinese company Vivo is not the only one that plans to launch such a device, as Samsung and LG are also preparing to announce similar smartphones.

ZDNET Korea reports that Samsung will announce the Galaxy S5 next year in February at Mobile World Congress 2014, which is set to take place in Barcelona, Spain.

Nothing out of the ordinary here, as Samsung is known for launching its flagship Android smartphones at MWC trade fair.

The good news is that Samsung Galaxy S5 will be the company's first handset to boast a 2K display, according to reports.

The Galaxy S5 will pack a QHD (not qHD) capacitive touchscreen display that is capable of rendering 2540 x 1440 pixels resolution.

It remains to be seen whether this will also be world's first smartphone to pack such a display or Vivo will get its Xplay 3S device on the market ahead of the competition.

Aside from bringing Android fans an incredible display, the Galaxy S5 will be integrated with the latest iris verification system, which allows users to open their phones with the eyes.

The technology is said to be available, but Samsung is now looking for ways to mass-produce it. It looks like the fingerprint scanner is already too mainstream for the South Korean company, which is why Samsung decided to come up with something that seems to be emerging from sci-fi movies.

In related news, Samsung is expected to announce the first smartphones powered by Tizen OS at MWC 2014 as well. They are likely to run the latest Tizen 3.0 operating system and will go on sale later next year.
