South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics has been long rumored to plan the release of a Galaxy S successor during the ongoing year, and some more info on the said device started to emerge recently.

The new smartphone, expected to run under Google's new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, the same as the newly released Nexus S, might be unveiled officially at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, as Samsung teases on its website.

The company notes that the MWC show in February is the place to learn more on the evolution of Galaxy S, and rumor has it that the specs and features of this Galaxy S2 device might indeed more than impress.

Apparently, Samsung plans on packing the smartphone with a dual-core application processor inside, on its own Orion SoC, with two ARM Cortex A9 cores clocked in at 1GHz, the same as NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chipset.

Specific info on the capabilities of this chip lack at the moment, but rumor has it that Samsung's silicon would be able to provide up to 5x improvement in the graphics performance when compared to the Hummingbird chip in Galaxy S.

The performance enhancements delivered by Galaxy S2, codenamed Seine, would result from the inclusion of 1GB of RAM into the mix, which would certainly make the smartphone a powerful competitor against Motorola's ATRIX 4G device.

Other specifications of this device would also include an 8-megapixel photo snapper with support for 1080p FullHD video recording, as well as a 4.3-inch next generation Super AMOLED plus touchscreen display that can boast a WVGA resolution.

With NFC (Near Field Communication) capabilities, along with a nice range of connectivity options, the 9 mm thick Samsung Galaxy S2 is expected to impress a lot when unveiled during the said event next month, so stay tuned to learn more on it.

Samsung notes on its website that February 13th would be the day when it would all be unveiled officially (via Android Guys).
