South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung has recently announced the upcoming availability of its high-end Android-based Galaxy S smartphone on the airwaves of all major wireless carriers in the United States, and the first models are expected to land on the market as soon as this week. T-Mobile's Vibrant and AT&T's Captivate are the first Galaxy S models to join the Android party in the US, and it seems that they might actually be able to make a big splash when available, especially courtesy of their graphics performance levels.

The Samsung Galaxy S smartphones are powered by a new 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, which reportedly boasts about three times better graphics performance than other handsets on the market at the moment. According to Android and Me, which came up with a series of GPU benchmarking results for the device, the 45nm Samsung chipset (S5PC110) inside the Galaxy S packs a PowerVR GPU, and this is the main reason for which they can offer such graphics performance.

The PowerVR family of solutions is already a popular one among Android users, especially since Motorola packed it (the SGX530 core) inside its DROID devices, but the chip inside Galaxy S (SGX540) should offer twice the performance of SGX530. When put side by side with Motorola Droid, Droid X / 2, Nexus One, Droid Incredible, HTC EVO, and myTouch 3G Slide in a benchmarking test, the AT&T-bound Samsung Captivate shows that the graphics core can indeed offer more performance than competitive solutions. Take a look at the video embedded below to learn a few more details on the matter.

The Samsung Captivate managed to top the list in the popular benchmark Neocore, as well as in the new GLBenchmark 2.0 suite, which was not released publicly as of yet. All in all, it seems that mobile phone users in the US, and in other markets, for that matter, interested in purchasing an Android-based mobile phone than boasts impressive graphics capabilities should strongly consider the Galaxy S lineup from Samsung. Of course, this doesn't mean that newer handsets won't be able to boast better graphics capabilities but, for the time being, Samsung's device leads, it seems.
