Although Galaxy R is not among the most popular Android smartphones launched by Samsung, the South Korean company has decided to offer an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

In fact, Samsung promised about three months ago that it would deliver an Android 4.0 ICS update for Galaxy R, but this has yet to happen.

The Galaxy R was pretty popular on the Indian market, which is why Samsung India confirmed that the smartphone would receive the long-awaited update soon.

It’s been almost three months since that announcement and Galaxy R owners have yet to receive the promised update.

When everyone thought that the Android 4.0 ICS upgrade would never happen, the folks over at XDA Developers have decided to stir things up and have confirmed that the update for Galaxy R is currently pushed in Sweden.

It appears that XDA forum user Machram has reported that it has just received Ice Cream Sandwich on his Galaxy R device when he got it back from service.

Given the fact that he lives in Sweden, we can assume that other Galaxy R owners in the country will receive the update soon.

Unfortunately, we’re not sure if this is just a test push or Samsung has finally decided to roll out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update globally.

Keep in mind that this update comes with the same TouchWiz UI, so you won’t be able to notice too many differences between Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread, though the former also brings lots of new features and improvements.

Samsung Galaxy R is currently powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and packs a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor clocked at 1 GHz. The smartphone also embeds 1GB of RAM and 2GB of ROM.
