In a few months, Samsung will launch a new flagship phone

Since Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge flagships a few months ago, everyone's focus has shifted towards the Korean tech giant’s next flagship, the Note 5. And a few days ago, we presented you a roundup of all the rumors that had been circling around in relation to the upcoming phablet.

Today, we’ll take a look at the things that we think would actually make the Galaxy Note 5 a better, more interesting device you’ll just have to purchase.

No 4K display just yet

Rumors have been saying that Samsung is testing a Galaxy Note 5 variant with a 4K display, but a smartphone boasting a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and 762ppi is a little too much.

The Galaxy Note 4 already comes with a 5.7-inch display with advanced 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution and 515ppi pixel density. The phablet’s battery life isn’t that bad, but it certainly could be better. So putting a power-gnawing 4K display on board will certainly not improve things.

Improved battery life

Speaking of which, we want to see the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 offer a prolonged run time when compared to its predecessor. Samsung might not bundle the phablet with a bigger juice box, but hopefully the phone will make use of a more efficient processor.

Word on the street indicates that the Galaxy Note 5 might arrive with a new Exynos 7430 chipset or a Exynos 7422, which is poised to be the company’s first ever all-in-one solution (ePoP) combining the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and modem on a single system-on-chip.

Improved camera functionality

The Samsung Galaxy S6 arrives with a 16MP main camera with optical image stabilization, autofocus and LED flash and a 5MP frontal one.

But the Korean tech giant is expected to soon roll out a software update which will make the camera even more advanced. Word on the street has it that afterwards, the flagship will be able to shoot in RAW and will even be granted an iPhone-esque exposure control.

So when the Galaxy Note 5 arrives it should have these features packed out of the box and ready to use. On top of that, given our escalating obsession with selfies, the frontal snapper should be of the 8MP variety.

Advanced S Pen functionality

The S Pen is one of the main reasons users choose to pay good cash for Samsung’s lineup of phablets. Creative individuals will probably benefit the most from the new features Samsung has in store for the Galaxy Note 5, but that doesn’t mean stylus support can’t come in handy to mainstream users.

Hopefully, Samsung will add a feature that will really stand out from the crowd this year.

Improved fingerprint scanner

Samsung has removed the cumbersome swipe-based fingerprint scanner from its Galaxy S5 and replaced it with a touch-based alternative in the Galaxy S6, which works much better.

Naturally, we expect and hope Samsung will embed the same system in its newest phablet.

More storage

The Galaxy Note 4 was only offered with 32GB of storage, with the possibility to increase it up to 128GB via microSD card.

But this seems to be insufficient judging by today’s standards. So Samsung should just go ahead and offer 64GB and 128GB models instead, like Xiaomi did with its premium Mi Note Pro.

Wireless charging

Since Galaxy S6 model comes with support for wireless charging without any sort of add-on accessory, we expect to see the same with the upcoming Galaxy Note 5.

The current device works with both Wireless Power Consortium (PQC) Qi and Power Matter Alliance (PMA) wireless charging standards.

This way, even if the new phablet will lack the long battery life we desire, at least we’ll be able to charge it quickly enough.

Flexible display

Before the Galaxy Note 4 came to be at IFA 2014, rumors emerged that the phone might launch with a flexible screen and a premium metal body.

While the former part of the statement didn’t prove to be true, we can’t help but wonder whether this year’s flagship might make it real.

We’ve been hearing a lot of talk related to Samsung and flexible displays. A number of recent patents seem to indicate that the tech giant has been experimenting with the technology for quite some time. But the question is, is Samsung ready to actually unveil a phone with a flexible display?
