When thinking of what smartphone to purchase next, one might take into consideration the device’s expected battery life, screen resolution or processor inside. But if you’re the type that likes to immortalize the special moments in life, you’ll probably be particularly interested in getting a smartphone with an advanced camera.

The dilemma arises, however, when you realize there are so many handsets with a worthy snapper to choose from. Well, Polish website Teleguru wanted to help you make an informed decision, so it devised a clever experiment to get the answer to the problem.

Most current flagships got their photo skills tested in the process

They gave some of the latest and greatest smartphones of the moment, including the iPhone 6, HTC One M8, LG G3, Nokia Lumia 1020, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and Sony Xperia Z3, to mobile photography enthusiasts and asked them to snap a bunch of photos in Morocco.

The results where then shipped off to professional photographers, who were asked to rank them best to worse. The experiment was pretty accurately devised from a scientific point of view, meaning that the professional photographers didn't know which picture was taken with which handset.

The judging board was made up of professionals ranging from lecturers on image studies to editors of photography magazines.

The conclusion the experts reached was that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 camera performed best in most of the scenarios proposed by the experiment, including perfect conditions (strong sunlight), HDR, details and contrast in shadows or cloudy day.

The runner up was Apple’s iPhone 6, which is not that unexpected, as Cupertino’s current flagship has an incredible snapper attached to it.

The tests covered nighttime and daytime photography, and in both categories, the two smartphones came up on top.

HTC One M8 was found to have the lousiest camera

It looks like the worst performing smartphone in terms of photography is the HTC One M8, which dons the UltraPixel camera as main snapper. With the One M9, the Taiwanese company introduced a 20MP sensor, which will certainly perform better.

Going back to the top, coming in at number three was the iPhone 5S followed by Nokia Lumia 1020, LG G3, Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z1 Compact (at number 7).
