We’re all too familiar with stories of smartphones catching fire or sometimes even exploding and putting people’s safety in danger.

But sometimes smartphones can save lives. It’s the case of a police sergeant senior major in Thailand who was shot in the line of duty. Luckily for Pol Maj Gen Sophon, he was carrying his Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone on the left side of his waist (as seen at Thai Visa).

The handset intercepted the bullet, slowing down its velocity so that the wound inflicted on the victim did not end up having life-threatening consequences. Surely, the officer still had to be hospitalized and is now recovering, but his side injury could have been a lot worse.

As for the Galaxy Note 2, the phone sustained fatal damage and was pronounced dead shortly after the incident. Even so, the officer’s friends, family and work mates are saying that the policeman was saved by the power of “Luangpor Samsung,” which translates into “sacred amulet.”

The story went pretty viral in Thailand and even reached the headquarters of Samsung in Bangkok. The company’s officials were pretty impressed by the whole story and announced that they would be awarding a brand new Galaxy S6 to the police officer.

Samsung also invited the officer to make a trip to Bangkok (all expenses paid) and pick up his prize as soon as he recovered from his injuries.

While most of us still have some time to wait ahead until we are able to pick up on of Samsung’s new flagships, others will be luckier. Although being shot is colossal price to pay for getting access to a new piece of technology sooner than everyone else.

Pol Maj Gen Sophon Thonglorm said that he accepted Samsung’s offer and he was very happy that the company chose to attach importance to what had happened to him. He’s also pretty thrilled that he would be getting a new phone and not just any phone.

The Galaxy S6 represents Samsung’s attempt to reinvent itself. The handset arrives with a stylish metal-glass design, a trimmed TouchWiz interface, and Samsung’s own chip running things on the inside.
