The handset has been showed at the MWC show in Barcelona

It seems that LG Electronics is not the only mobile phone maker to work on the development of watch-shaped handsets. Another company that has plans in that area would be Samsung, which was caught on camera at the Mobile World Congress this week in Barcelona with a nice wrist phone dubbed GT-S1100.

Unfortunately, the company kept its new goodies under seal behind a glass case at the MWC show, so there are not too many details on the device available, but it seems that it will sport a full touchscreen, Bluetooth, and a speakerphone, just as LG's GD910 does.

Samsung is known to have worked for about a decade on the development of watch phones, and the newly spotted device seems like an evolution over the years. At the same time, the new entry is dated 2009, and we might have a chance to see the new Samsung GT-S1100 watch phone launched on the market in the near future.

For what it's worth, besides the specs we talked about above, the company didn't unveil any other details on the new device, nor did it say any word on a possible time frame for the launch. That, of course, if it plans to actually sell the handset, for it is a common fact that many similar prototypes faded out in the dark over the years, making LG's watch phone the first ever commercially available device of this kind.

Some of you might remember that LG came up with its watch phone prototype about a year ago, at CES 2008, and only announced the production and the release of the handset one year afterwards. Maybe there is a big chance that the other Korean mobile phone maker, Samsung, will follow in LG's steps and that next year we'll be able to see another similar device getting ready for a run on the market.

Take a look at the video below to have a glimpse at the Samsung GT-S1100 watch phone.
