UK wireless carrier Vodafone has added a new mobile phone to its coming soon page, namely the Samsung GALAXY Y, a new device that should sport an affordable price tag when put up for sale.

The smartphone was unveiled to the world only a few weeks ago, when Samsung announced a new naming scheme for its devices, and runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.

The handset arrives on shelves with a 3-inch touchscreen display and with a fast 832MHz application processor, and should provide users with good performance capabilities.

“Even if you've never used a smartphone before, you'll find the Samsung GALAXY Y is easy to use - whether you're calling your mum, texting a mate or updating Facebook. Its 3" touchscreen responds quickly to taps and swipes, so you can get to everything you need in a flash,” the wireless carrier notes.

The mobile phone's touchscreen display can deliver a 320 x 240 pixels resolution, and is complemented by a 2-megapixel photo snapper that Samsung packed on its back.

The mobile phone also comes with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, and should be capable of easily keeping users connected with their friends and family over social networking sites.

Not to mention that it is powered by the latest version of Android from Google, which includes support for a wide range of Google Mobile services, as well as for applications and games available for download via the Android Market.

“The latest version of the popular Android operating system - known as Gingerbread - will help you make the most of your GALAXY Y. It gives you several homescreens where you can put icons and shortcuts to the things you use most often,” Vodafone notes.

“So you might choose to have news and weather widgets on one screen, your favourite contacts on another, Facebook and Twitter on another and so on. Set up your Samsung GALAXY Y however suits you best.”

The new smartphone was already listed on Vodafone's coming soon web page, and can be seen here, where users can also register to receive updates on it.

The carrier does not offer specific info on its availability or pricing, but it seems that the device might arrive on shelves as free of charge on the carrier's £15.50 per month plan.
