Samsung Electronics, a worldwide leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today a new range of processors specifically designed for upcoming digital photo frames. The makers claim that the series provides improved image rendering and video decoding, all inside a single package. In addition, the processors will also be able to support touchscreen interfaces and digital DMB-TV tuners. The new range of processors for digital photo frames will enable the development of better products that will enhance the consumer experience.

“Digital photo frames are fast becoming a must-buy gift for sharing memories with family and friends,” said Dr. Yiwan Wong, vice president of marketing for Samsung’s System LSI Division. “We believe this new series of processors for the DPF market has raised the bar on consumer experience with regards to performance and available features.”

According to Samsung, its latest S5L2010 can decode 57-megapixel JPEG images in just one second. Also, the new chips will bring forward the decoding and handling of MPEG-1/2/4, Xvid, Motion JPEG, MP3, WMA, OGG and AAC files. In addition, the integrated display controller can provide support for up to XGA resolution analog or digital interfaces. Other features include the support for built-in 2-channel audio, a drive for LED backlight, and the necessary support for SLC/MMC NAND flash storage, or to put it simply, a multi card reader.

The new Samsung processors have been built using a 65nm CMOS process technology, which has been applied to an ARM9 core. The company has revealed that the S5L2010 media processors are now sampling and are expected to enter production sometime in the first quarter of the next year. The processors are not meant just for Samsung's own digital photo frames, but also for products coming from a number of OEM and ODM sources.
