Qualcomm is still struggling with the Snapdragon 810

We have been hearing more and more of how Samsung wants to become less reliant on outside partners as far as its smartphone manufacturing business is concerned.

A few days ago we told you that the Korean tech giant started work on designing its own CPUs with custom cores which are pegged for release in 2016.

But while we’re calling the Exynos 7420 an in-house chip, the SoC is not really entirely produced by the Korean behemoth. The architecture is made using the company’s own 14nm FinFET processes, but inside the SoC live eight ARM-designed cores.

Now, we’re told that Samsung is trying to break the bonds with ARM, like it did this year with Qualcomm when it decided against implementing the Snapdragon 810 inside its Galaxy S6 flagship, reportedly fearing overheating issues.

Samsung is going to play a big part in Apple A9 chip production

Samsung’s grasp of the silicone market seems to be extending faster and faster, as a new report aptly proves.

For starters, the Korean tech giant is expected to take up the manufacturing of Apple’s A9/A9X chipsets. Surely, Sammy is in competition with TSMC here and one of them will certainly take the bigger share.

Analyst Mark Li from Bernstein Research (as reported by Barron) claims that Samsung has seen recent yield issues with the 14nm FinFET manufacturing processor, so due to this, Apple will give the Korean manufacturer only 40% of all A9 chip orders, while the rest will go to TSMC. However, it remains to be seen if this information proves to be accurate.

The same source goes on to mention another very interesting detail. Qualcomm has been rumored to be facing overheating problems with the Snapdragon 810 processor for quite a while now.

Even if several smartphones bundling this platform were pushed into the wild, the whispers related to this matter just wouldn’t stop. More recently, the brand new HTC One M9 was said to be suffering from overheating problems.

Is Qualcomm turning to Samsung for 14nm chips?

Well, yes, the insider source claims that Qualcomm might be turning to Samsung as its main supplier of 14nm chipsets. This information has been floating around ever since earlier this year, when it was revealed that Samsung could become Qualcomm’s main provider beginning Q2 2015.

In case Samsung proves capable of delivering enough 14nm FinFET processors, that is.
