The launching of the first 16Gb NAND Flash chip represents an important victory for the South Korean producer, which promised that soon enough we will also have the 32Gb chips, built on 50 nanometer technology.

Switching to these chips means that by 2006, Samsung will be able
to make memory cards with capacities of up to 32GB, which will incorporate nine 16Gb chips.

This means that Samsung and other producers will be able to launch notebooks, cell phones, PDAs or MP3 players, with this storage capacity using only NAND flash memory.

Although the hard-disks' size/capacity ratio has been significantly improved, Hitachi recently launching an 8GB Microdrive measuring 1 inch, flash memories are regarded as a safer alternative, especially for the devices which are likely to be subjected to shocks.

Samsung is currently the strongest supporter of Flash memories, the company owning 70% of the market.

Samsung believes that the NAND Flash chips will double their capacity every 12 months, which means that in 2007, we might have 64GB memory cards, and after another year, this capacity could increase to 128 GB.
