Tablets are extremely popular devices in tech consumers’ preferences, and with the holiday season under way, their numbers are most likely going to receive a significant boost.

According to new information posted by ABI Research (via DigiTimes) the number of tablets in use will surpass the 285 million threshold by the end of the year.

The US is highlighted as the country with the loftiest tablet markets in the world, with 70 million tablets activated within its borders, which translates into one in four people actually owning a tablet.

ABI Research believes that 51% of tablet installment base is achieved via iOS, while 40% is coming from Android devices. The firm notes that Apple’s grip on the tablet market is not as impressive as it was three years ago, when the slate boom started.

Samsung has continued to significantly increase its hold of the Android market, posting 20% growth in Q3 2013, but it still has some work to do before it takes Apple down. For that purpose, Sammy is gearing up to roll out four brand new tablet models. However, it should be interesting to see Samsung's tablet sales for the holiday quarter.

Apple, on the other hand, is expected to have a “stellar fourth quarter of 2013” due to the launch of the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display, so watch out Samsung!
