Given the iPod touch enjoyed quite an OK level of success despite basically being an iPhone without the phone functions, Samsung has decided that adopting this market approach for their own products is perhaps a good idea and thus introduced two Android-running Galaxy Player models.

As you might have guessed, Samsung's new players are built largely on the same platform as the company's Galaxy S smartphone, with a few minor differences, the most important one being, quite obviously, that they're not GSM-enabled.

For some reason, instead of releasing a single Galaxy Player model, Samsung actually decided to push two new models out to the market, one featuring a 4-inch display and weighing around 5 ounces, and the second sporting a 5-inch screen and weighing 7 ounces.

This, however, is the only major difference between the two, because otherwise, the new Galaxy Players offer roughly the same features, including Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) connectivity, as well as both front and rear-facing cameras (as a bonus, the 5-inch model also sports a LED flash light on the rear side, enabling users to take better quality photos), not to mention the Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS they come pre-loaded with.

It's also very interesting to note that these two players enable an enhanced level of functionality as far as the VoiP communications are concerned, both of them coming equipped with Qik applications for VoIP calls over a WiFi connection, while Skype will also come pre-loaded on the 4-inch model, all of these apps fully leveraging the players' built-in microphone and speakers.

And since we're on the topic of speakers, it's also interesting to mention that these things come equipped with stereo speakers, with Virtual 5.1 surround sound, that will really come in handy especially when playing one of the many supported multimedia files, such as DivX, Xvid, WMV, MPEG4 and H.264 video formats and MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg, and Flac music files, all of which are stored either within the player's 8GB of internal memory or an SDHC memory card (up to 32GB cards supported).

Unfortunately, despite offering plenty of info on the tech specs and features of its new Galaxy Players, Samsung has refrained from providing any significant details on their pricing and availability, only saying that they'll pop up around the US in spring, 2011.
