Intended as a companion to notebooks and netbooks

Samsung has already made its mark on the world, at least for today, by launching a pair of storage solutions. To be precise, the company unveiled not just a new line of hard disk drives, but also an internal Blu-ray combo that seeks to satisfy both in terms of performance as well as aesthetic value. Nevertheless, Samsung doesn't seem to think this much of a product offer is enough, which is why it decided to also bring forth the SE-S084D.

The SE-S084D (US$69.99) is one of those devices that were shown off months ago but did not yet get a chance to start selling. In this case, the first official announcement was made at CES 2010. Since then, it even gained an iF Product Design Award, thanks to its rounded shape and smooth metallic centerline.

Good looks aren't all that Samsung has to show, of course. The drive is actually 20% smaller and 25% lighter than other portable external ODDs, which is quite significant, and convenient, for a gadget meant as a notebook or netbook companion on the go. On the other hand, even though it is so compact, the unit is still perfectly capable of reading various types of CDs and DVDs, and even scribe data onto such disks.

CD-R/CD-RW are written at 24x, whereas speeds of 8X are possible for DVD+R/-R and DVD+RW. Furthermore, 6x speeds are achieved for DVD+R/-R DL and DVD-RW, whereas DVD-RAM are written at 5x.

“With a more compact footprint and lighter weight than competitive offerings, the new external DVD writer delivers high performance with a USB power source to eliminate electrical outlet requirements. As an eco-friendly product, the DVD writer is manufactured with lead-free soldering technology. The drive is also compliant to international environmental regulations that limit the use of materials such as Pb, Cd, Cr+6, Hg, PBBs and PBDE,” said John Suh, Director of Samsung Semiconductor Inc. Optical Disc Drive Division Sales Team.
