Samsung Electronics has just announced a new external DVD writer, as part of the company's SE-S084B series. The new model comes to provide users of portable computer systems with an external optical drive that boasts a slim design and provides seven color options. The new drive should meet the increasing demand for external optical drives, in a market where netbooks and small-sized portable computer systems are continuously gaining popularity.

“By adopting lead-free soldering technology, the SE-S084B has an eco-friendly design and is RoHS compliant,” said Jin-soo Lee, vice president of strategic marketing for Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology. “The new external DVD writers offer a wide choice of color and added portability for enhanced usability.”

According to Samsung, the new external DVD writer has been designed to adopt a single interconnect cable that can be used for both data transfers but also for powering up the device. Basically, when the DVD writer is connected to the PC system via an available USB port the same USB cable also acts as a separate power cable. This allows users of Samsung's new external optical drive to easily carry the device alongside their portable computer systems.

Samsung is a well known manufacturer of computer optical drives, which is why the latest product to join the portfolio doesn't come without the specifically developed technologies that can ensure that the device is working at optimum performance. Such technologies include the Speed Adjustment Technology, Tilt Actuator Compensation, and Double Optimum Power Control.

The new external DVD writer from Samsung is available in an 8X DVD+R and DVD-R writer, a 6X DVD+R and -R dual layer writer and a 5X DVD-RAM writer. Color options include black, white, silver, pink, blue, sky-blue and red. Price wise, you are looking at an MSRP of $79.99.
