U.S. Cellular plans on having four new Android-based devices available for its users before the end of the ongoing year, and the first in the series would be Samsung Acclaim (SCH-r880), which was announced officially as slated for release on July 9. With a 3.2-inch touch screen, a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard and Google's Android 2.1 OS on board, the new device is expected to feature a price tag of $99.95 upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement with the carrier.

“We are excited to deliver this cutting-edge technology,” said Edward Perez, vice president of sales and marketing operations for U.S. Cellular. “Many of our customers lead busy lifestyles, and the Acclaim is the perfect device for multi-tasking while staying in touch with family and friends.” The Android 2.1 platform on the device offers access to Google mobile services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and Google Talk, in addition to the Android Market, Google Goggles and Google Maps with navigation.

The specifications list of the new device includes a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, a 3.0-megapixel photo snapper with LED flash and video recording capabilities, microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space (a 4GB card included in the package), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and VPN (Virtual Private Network) capabilities, support for corporate and personal email, support for text, picture and video messaging, as well as support for social networking sites, such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.

The Acclaim’s slide-out QWERTY keyboard makes it easy for users to quickly send text and picture messages to their friends or post messages to their favorite social networking sites, including Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. The Acclaim will be pre-loaded for U.S. Cellular customers with applications such as My Contacts Backup, City ID, Tone Room Deluxe and Your Navigator Deluxe, U.S. Cellular’s free voice-prompted turn-by-turn navigation system,” the wireless carrier stated.

Starting with July 9, US Cellular customers would be able to purchase the new Android-based mobile phone from their carrier for $99.95 after mail-in rebate and upon the signing of a two-year contract agreement. Moreover, they would also receive a $20 gift card to use for purchasing applications from the Android Market.
