You might be all excited about Samsung finally introducing its long-awaited lineup of AMOLED tablets next week, but you should know the Korean tech giant has something juicer in the oven (doesn't it always?)

4K seems to be another hot spot in technology as of late, and even if 4K tablets are a rare flower in the desert, this will change soon enough. Sure, you can pick up Panasonic’s 20-inch 4K tablet, but what about the more consumer-friendly ones?

TechRadar assures us we won’t have to wait long before 4K slates go mainstream for the masses. According to them, a 12-inch Samsung prototype was spotted during the LTE Broadcast demonstration with the occasion of the French Open at Roland Garros.

The tablet was streaming video at 720p, but the person performing the experiment was able to pull up additional windows, thus showcasing the true extend of the display’s clarity.

Surely, this device was a reference design bestowed upon operators so they could perform some tests with it. We’re not 100% sure this is a Samsung tablet, but we’re inclined to think so due to the physical home button located below 12-inch screen, which is one of Sammy’s tale-tale signs.

As for specifications, we don’t have the complete list, but we can tell you a Snapdragon 801 processor was placed under the hood.

Further on, when such a tablet indeed makes it on the market, the product will probably be bundling a Snapdragon 805 processor which will be capable of providing better quality for 720p and 1080p clips. The chip architecture will also add a new video format, HEVC that’s lighter on the bandwidth.

If your mouth is watering already, we have further good news. During a Qualcomm event held in Paris, the company’s Senior VP of Product Management, Raj Talluri revealed 4K tablet will be upon us before 2014 comes to an end.

However, take the information that Samsung will put out a 4K tablet with a grain of salt, as this is just mere speculation at this point.

For the time being, the Galaxy Premiere Event is on the horizon and, who knows, maybe the Korean tech giant will even have to show us something 4K related.

In related news, Japan Display announced not so long ago that it has completed the development of a 10.1-inch LCD prototype for tablets capable of supporting 2,840 x 2,160 pixels (4K2K). So the 4K tablet ecosystem seems to be extending fast.
