Samsung, one of the world's leading vendors of NAND Flash storage solutions, has recently announced that its 60GB and 120GB solid state drives (SSDs) have been selected for use as an option across the full range of HP's ProLiant G6 and G5 server systems. These severs have been built to support virtualized environments that require significant memory, data storage and network connections to deliver the necessary server performance. Available in rack, tower and blade form factors, HP's ProLiant G6 and G5 servers are built to provide SSD compatibility, offering a choice for a higher performance, more energy-efficient storage solution.

“We are delighted to be partnering with HP to offer an enticing SSD storage option in their enterprise servers,” said Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. “Using SSDs as the primary storage medium in enterprise servers will provide optimal value for data centers, with their exceptional low-power attributes, long-term reliability and outstanding performance.”

Using Samsung's new single-level-cell (SLC) 3Gb/s SATA SSDs, as an alternative solution to traditional 10K and 15K RPM hard disk drives, HP's ProLiant servers can reduce the power drain and also deliver increased performance, lower latency, consequently providing a solution that can be 40-50 times faster than traditional HDDs, according to Samsung.

The company's SSDs are featured with a power consumption of 1.9 watts when writing and 1.5 watts when reading, while in idle mode, these consume just 0.1 watts. As far as performance goes, the drives are said to deliver a sequential read speed of 230 MB/s, while the sequential write speed is at 180MB/s, with 25,000 IOPS for random read and 6000 IOPS for random write.

“Customers demand fast, energy efficient servers that enable them to do more with less, cutting the costs associated with running their data centers,” said Jim Ganthier, vice president of marketing, Industry Standard Servers, HP. “Samsung’s latest SSD technology coupled with HP ProLiant servers delivers energy efficient server platforms to enable customers to slash their power usage and reduce costs.”
