Samsung has announced the introduction of a new and improved SIM card solution, dubbed the S-SIM, with forward compatibility that enables customer experience in next generation multimedia intensive services.

The new SIM card technology will support the current MMC standard interface as well as both the USB 2.0 and InterChip-USB interfaces. It is based on the original SIM standard to ensure compatibility with conventional systems and support high-speed host interfaces like USB and MMC cards.

"This new S-SIM(TM) card solution, which supports multiple and flexible connectivity and high-performance architecture, demonstrates Samsung's technology leadership and vision in providing the ultimate technology and solutions for fast- evolving mobile and IT environments," said Dr. Chil Hee Chung, Senior Vice President of the Chip Card and Microcontroller Development Team at Samsung Electronics. "The automatic host interface detection and configuration feature allows MNOs, SIM card makers, and mobile terminal makers to utilize currently deployed next generation SIM based services and ensure a smooth transition to the next generation standard of SIM services."

The main advantage of the S-SIM is the possibility it offers mobile operators and SIM card makers, which can now build future services using either the old or the new standards.

The S-SIM is controlled by a separate microprocessor that has its own RAM and automatically configures itself to the interface that it detects, thus allowing instant support for advanced services like near-field communications.

When the standard-compliant USB interface-based terminals will become available on the market, the S-SIM card will also automatically support those USB interfaces. Samsung's new S-SIM card solution will become available to SIM card makers during the first half of 2007.
