Connecting a digital camera to a computer without using any wires seems to be quite an important issue nowadays, and several solutions for this problem have been provided until now. One of them is the EyeFi wireless memory card, another one is incorporating a wireless module in the camera itself, but Samsung has decided to do things a little differently and launched the NaBee, a wireless connectivity solution powered by Alereon’s AL5000 Worldwide Wireless USB Chipset.

The main selling advantage provided by Samsung’s NaBee is the fact that it allows for a simple, high-speed wireless communication between a digital still camera and a PC. All users will have to do is simply plug the miniature dongle into the camera's USB connector, and its matching dongle into the PC.

The wireless connection then established will behave in the exact same way as any USB cable. Alereon AL5000 Chipset family transmits and receives WiMedia band groups one through six, which span frequencies of 3.1 to 10.6 GHz respectively. In this way, devices based on this solution can provide an optimum level of functionality pretty much anywhere around the world, regardless of the local regulations related to UWB.

And why has Samsung decided to go for wireless USB? Well, it’s quite simple, really – because the market demanded it. Seong-Young Han, group leader of New Business Development at Samsung Techwin, stated that "As customer demand continues to grow for unique applications, we are dedicated to differentiating our products in powerful ways. Samsung is a worldwide leader in the digital camera market and continues to exemplify that leadership with today’s Wireless USB introduction showcasing creative innovation using new high speed wireless technology."

According to the joint statement released by the two companies, the NaBee solution will be available on the market in December 2008, just in time for the rush of digital camera sales that typically accompanies the Christmas shopping season.
