Samba, an app that seamlessly integrates Linux/Unix servers and desktops into Active Directory environments using the winbind daemon, is now at version 4.1.9.

This is yet another maintenance build in the 4.1.x branch, and it follows the same trend as all the previous updates. It's basically just a small upgrade made for security purposes. Nonetheless, if you are using Samba on your computer, you should upgrade as soon as it hits the repositories. It's also possible to compile it, so you don't need wait around for the repos.

According to the developers, “all current released versions of Samba are vulnerable to a denial of service on the nmbd NetBIOS name services daemon. A malformed packet can cause the nmbd server to loop the CPU and prevent any further NetBIOS name service. This flaw is not exploitable beyond causing the code to loop expending CPU resources.”

This current version of Samba closes this vulnerability, but the developers have also used the same update to repair another exploit that was not causing major problems. The latest update doesn't bring any new features or other changes, which means that you might be able to continue running older builds.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download Samba 4.1.9 right now from Softpedia. If you are using this version of Samba or an older one, you should upgrade as soon as possible to take advantage of the multiple fixes.
