Samba, an app that seamlessly integrates Linux/Unix servers and desktops into Active Directory environments using the winbind daemon, is now at version 4.0 Beta 1.

Samba 4.0 Beta 1 contains all the technology parts, more specifically a file server and the AD domain controller previously known as 'samba4'.

The most important feature of the new Samba release is support for the server-side of the Active Directory logon environment used by Windows 2000 operating systems and later.

According to the developers, Samba 4.0 Beta 1 comes with two different file servers, one from the Samba 3.x series, 'smbd', and the secon one, 'NTVFS', a file server used in the previous Alpha version of Samba.

A complete list of changes and features of Samba 4.0 Beta 1 can be found in the official announcement.

Download Samba 4.0 Beta 1 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a beta version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
