The beautiful Spanish actress began her acting career starring in telenovelas and she has decided, this time around, to do more than appear in front of the cameras. Salma takes the chair of the executive producer for the latest ripoff of the Colombian show 'Yo soy Betty la fea'.
The Spanish version is actually six years old and has seen many remakes over the years, making it a world hit. The plot focused on a young girl with a very bad fashion sense, who soon becomes the center of ridicule for all his colleagues. That is, until she has a drastic make over.
Hayek did not appear in the Colombian telenovela, but she is set to make her appearance in the English version, besides producing it, she announced at the 2006 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour. The leading role will be taken by America Ferrera, best known for her part in the 2002 independent movie, 'Real Women Have Curves'.

When asked if the new series, and especially the title, will angry viewers, Salma stated that the comedy is actually attacking the pre-established concept people have of beauty: 'It's sarcastic [the title]. Anybody who isn't super skinny and really tall, some people think they're ugly. We're making fun of it. We're not really calling her ugly'.
The Oscar nominated actress decided to take the show to America in English after seeing the unprecedented success the original registered: 'I'm sure that the American audience is very thirsty for something like this and they're just going to love it'.
No exact date for the beginning of the show has been announced, but it is known that ABC will own 'Ugly Betty''s exclusive airing rights.
