Hollywood actress Salma Hayek gets involved in helping groups aiding battered women in her native Mexico, as the 39-year-old beauty works with the "Speak Out Against Domestic Violence" campaign of the Avon Foundation. The actress thinks that domestic violence is a huge problem that affects women all over the world, statistics saying that this problem involves one in three women worldwide.
This week, the "Frida" star made two donations: a $25,000 donation to a battered woman's shelter in her hometown Coatzacoalcos, in Veracruz state on Mexico's Gulf Coast and another one, with the sum of $50,000 to some anti-domestic violence groups in the northern city of Monterrey, 435 miles north of Mexico City.
In a press conference held on Tuesday, the Mexican actress said: "No woman has to be a victim of physical abuse. Women have to feel like they are not alone. Every woman who thinks she is the only victim of violence has to know that there are many more. It's not worse here or there, it's a worldwide problem"
