Salix MATE 14.1 Beta 1, a GNU/Linux distribution based on Slackware that is simple, fast, easy to use, and based on the MATE desktop environment, is ready for testing and download.

The MATE version of Salix has been finally released and features some interesting changes, although it's pretty similar with the Xfce variant.

“The application selection in this release is mostly the same as with our latest Xfce release, with one major exception; the default browser in this release is Firefox ESR. Other than that, and the MATE desktop itself of course, the usual LibreOffice, GIMP, Exaile, Transmission, Viewnior etc are there. Also Totem is the default multimedia player for the MATE edition,” reads the announcement.

The developer has integrated the latest MATE 1.8 version in the distribution and it's the most advanced release available. Even if the distribution should be stable, in theory, users might find some bugs and other issues, in which case they should report back.

A complete list of new features can be found in the changelog. Download Salix MATE 14.1 Beta 1 right now from the website.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
