Salix Fluxbox, a GNU/Linux distribution based on Slackware that is simple, fast, easy to use, and based on the Fluxbox window manager, has finally reached a stable version and is now available for download.

Along with the Openbox version of Salix, the Fluxbox edition is one of the lightest iterations available in the series. Unfortunately, it's not exactly on the list of priorities for the developer and it's been trailing a little behind, but now it's ready.

Salix is one the few very active distributions based on Slackware, which is a famous and very stable operating system that has been around for quite a while. It's rather different from what everyone else is doing because it is a modular system and it has a rolling release model.

Salix Fluxbox has returned

"Salix Fluxbox is back for 14.1! Our Fluxbox edition is designed to bring a minimalist environment to your desktop. The default desktop layout is comprised only of the Fluxbox panel and the right click menu will bring up the Fluxbox menu, so it should be really light on resources."

"The default and recommended Full mode installs all available software in the iso, which includes one application per task and should cover most users' needs. The Basic mode installs only Fluxbox, along with the Salix system tools and package management applications, the PCMan file manager as well as the Firefox web browser. It is intended for advanced users that would like to customize their own Fluxbox installation to their own liking. The Core mode, is intended only for expert users and installs only a command-line environment, that is however feature complete and should provide a nice base for people that want to install Salix on their servers or install a graphical environment of their own choice on top of it," say the devs in the announcement.

According to the changelog, PCManFM is now the default file manager, Firefox is provided as the default Internet browser, Abiword and Gnumeric are now the office applications, Whaawmp is the media player and Exaile is the audio player, the Salix Codecs Installer will provide all the necessary codecs, mtpaint is installed as the default picture editor, a collection of Salix System Tools is also present in this release, package management is being handled by Gslapt, and numerous other packages have been updated.

This is a rather stable system, and if you decide to try it, you should consider using a virtual machine, like VirtualBox for example, before proceeding to replace your OS.

A complete list of new features can be found in the changelog. You can download Salix Fluxbox 14.1 right now from Softpedia.
