The shooting of a student at Salisbury University has prompted panic on campus on Tuesday evening, reports say.

One student was wounded and another one was shot in an Onley Road house, in what police have described as a domestic violence crime.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis states for Delmarva Now that the gunman has also taken his own life.

His victim was previously enrolled in Salisbury University, and he protected the killer's ex-girlfriend.

Charles Abbott of Hebron died looking out for Kristen Loetz. He was pronounced dead at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

"It’s just like CJ to be a hero," his sister, April Abbott, has stated.

Loetz was injured, having been shot multiple times, but has survived the attack. She is currently in critical condition and has been airlifted to a hospital in Baltimore.

"Our prayers and condolences go out to the families and friends of those impacted by last evening's tragic off-campus shooting. [...] Sadly, relationship violence is a national issue and our campus is not immune to it," Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach expresses in a statement conveyed by Delaware Online.

"Let us hope for Kristen's full recovery and healing for all the family members and friends of these three individuals," she adds.

Students on campus have been warned to stay off the street where the shooting has taken place while an investigation is ongoing.

"The investigation thus far reveals that no continuing threat exists to the campus community. […] Authorities still ask that the Onley Road area be avoided as the investigation continues," an alert sent out by Salisbury University reads.

The Sheriff has identified the shooter as 21-year-old Ryan Shallue. He had traveled from Queen Anne’s County to Salisbury to see 20-year-old Loetz.
