SalentOS, a GNU / Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that uses Openbox window manager, is now at version 14.04 and is following closely the release from Canonical.

As the version implies, SalentOS is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and aims to combine ease of use with the features of Ubuntu. In this case, it uses Openbox, which is actually one of the most lightweight solutions that you can find.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS has been a very successful launch and numerous other developers chose to release their own Linux distributions based on it. As it turns out, Openbox is not one of the most popular solutions as a window manager, but the developers have adopted it nonetheless.

The Linux distribution is aimed at old computers and the devs only provide a 32-bit version for the OS.

“The first operating system completely inspired by the Salento. Land molded by the sea and wind, steeped in history and art in the south of the Italian peninsula SalentOS is available for 32 bit machines with PAE and standard kernel (same ISO).”

“This operating system is suitable for anyone looking for a solid, user-friendly and high performative OS! Being based on the easiest GNU/Linux Operating System ever (Ubuntu), reliability and simplicity of use are ensured. High performances are guaranteed by the use of Openbox, the default desktop manager of SalentOS. As a matter of fact, Openbox is known for the paucity of hardware resources it requires to work at its best, so it is also suitable for older computers or resource-hungry devices such as netbooks,” reads the official website.

SalentOS developers tried to keep the system as light as possible, which means that all the added packages will reflect that philosophy. The default Internet browser is Chromium, Geary is used as the default email client, Mousepad is the text editor, and Pidgin is the default messaging app.

Some of the previous features haven't changed. For example, Faenza-icons is still used, xfce4-settings-manager is still used as a background session, and some other GNOME and Xfce elements have been kept.

It's also probable that a 64-bit version of SalentOS will pop up soon, although previous releases didn't include one.

Check out the official website for more details about this distribution, however the official announcement hasn't been published yet. You can download SalentOS 14.04 right now from Softpedia.
