Does not need to deliver the serious stories of other franchises

Most big franchises these days are trying to deliver important stories with a serious tone but one leading executive at THQ believes that players also need distractions like the new Saints Row open world game.

Speaking to WorthPlaying, Danny Bilson, who is the leader of the core games division at publisher THQ, has said, “I look at Saints Row as a send-up, a parody, a comment on all of the other big, open-world crime games that have come before.”

He added, “Personally, I love those games and play them top to bottom, but some of those have become very believable in their own reality – almost like the Martin Scorsese version of a game. This one has gone much more, for me, to the underground comic book version.”

Bilson believes that there's space on the market for both types of games, with players interested in seeing how the big cinematic series deliver ever more complex stories and then choosing to play something like Saints Row for the pure feeling of freedom that the game delivers.

The executive believes that the biggest challenge for developers at the moment is to cram enough content into their games to justify that 60 dollar price tag for the title and he says that Saints Row: The Third offers enough variety for a huge number of hours.

Saints Row started life as a direct competitor for the Grand Theft Auto series from Rockstar and Take Two but has since evolved into one of the craziest titles on the market, with activities like insurance fraud and naked street runs.

Saints Row: The Third will be launched in the middle of November on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 and those who are interested can now download called the Initiation Station, allowing them to create the character that they would like to play on launch date.
