Volition’s massive open-world hit of 2013, Saints Row 4, is currently being ported for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 platforms, redubbed Saints Row 4: Re-Elected.

The news comes from PAX Prime, where publisher Deep Silver has also revealed that the mystery announcement everyone was waiting for and secretly hoping would be Saints Row 5 is actually a new Saints Row expansion, titled Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell.

Saints Row 4 is an over-the-top action-adventure video game where players step into the shoes of the leader of a street gang who has become the president of the United States, and must save the world from an alien invasion.

The aliens place the protagonist inside a computer-simulated version of the city of Steelport, and most of the game takes place inside the simulation where you face enemies from your past and have to fight to find a way to escape.

Although the game is largely played as a third-person shooter, there are numerous mini-games that completely alter the gameplay dynamic, such as nods to the Streets of Rage series and many others, in addition to the Grand Theft Auto-like stealing, driving and shooting.

Another neat element of Saints Row 4 is the inclusion of various superhuman powers, that infuse the player with the ability to make giant leaps, climb buildings, shoot arcane projectiles and even fly.

The game is widely considered one of the most fun and diverse open-world sandbox titles ever created, praised for its diversity of mechanics and freedom of movement and for its solid and witty writing and many zany references and mini-games.

The current-gen port of Saints Row 4 is being handled by High Voltage Software, and will be available both as a standalone, including all released DLC, as well as bundled together with the Gat Out of Hell expansion.

The release on Microsoft and Sony’s newest home consoles will also be accompanied by a bunch of new features, which so far the publisher has only teased us about, like voice commands containing profanity and a modding system that allows gamers to create their own weapons.

For the time being, the company hasn’t released any trailer or screenshots from the upcoming re-release, so we don’t know how much of a visual leap the action-adventure game will make.

Both Saints Row 4: Re-Elected and Saints Row 4: Gat Out of Hell will be released on January 27, 2015. We’ll be back with more information on both titles in the next couple of days.
