After confirming Saints Row 4 earlier today by releasing a special gameplay teaser trailer, Deep Silver and Volition have now revealed an official list of details about the upcoming game, its over the top premise, and the array of gameplay mechanics that will be employed by it.

The Saints Row franchise, after THQ's bankruptcy, was sold alongside the Metro one to Koch Media, which also acquired the developer of the series, Volition.

Now, Volition together with Koch's publishing division, Deep Silver, have officially revealed Saints Row 4, the next installment in the popular open-world series.

We already got to admire an outrageous gameplay video earlier today, alongside the game's release dates of August 20, in North America, and August 23, in Europe.

Now, the two companies have shared some more details about the game thanks to an official statement via Joystiq.

The new game sees the Third Street Saints as the leaders of the free world, as the playable protagonist is now the president of the United States. Unfortunately, aliens kidnap and send him to a simulated version of Steelport city where he can use superpowers. Check out the full description below.

"In the next open-world installment of Saints Row, Deep Silver Volition continues the story of the Third Street Saints by elevating their status to the highest level – the leaders of the free world. In Saints Row IV, the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States. But the Saints are just getting started."

"Now the larger-than-life insanity of the Saints series gets a new twist with a catastrophic alien invasion, and the aliens have transported the Saints to a bizarro-Steelport simulation. Wield gargantuan superpowers and fight to free humanity from alien granddaddy Zinyak's mental grasp. Escape the simulation that's trapped the Saints crew, or die trying."

Players will be able to use all sorts of alien weapons and technology, not to mention over-the-top superpowers that allow them to leap over buildings, outrun sports cars, or send enemies flying.

Saints Row 4 will be released on August 20, in North America, and August 23 in Europe and the rest of the world, for PC and current-generation consoles like the PS3 or Xbox 360.
