Wireless digital photo frames are the hottest trend nowadays, and this is the reason why several of the most important names in the industry (as well as several companies with less experience in the field) have begun to roll out such products. And the latest such item that has come to my attention is the AgfaPhoto AF5080W model, presented by Sagem Communications under the AgfaPhoto brand, a device that uses an advanced Freescale CPU and runs a variety of Linux applications.

One of the main selling points of the new AgfaPhoto AF5080W (which, strangely enough, is nowhere to be found, at least for the time being, on the AgfaPhoto page) is the i.MX31 multimedia applications processor from Freescale, which takes care of all the processing issues related to the user-interface. Furthermore, the device has been equipped with an 8-inch TFT LCD panel, which displays photo at 800x600 pixels resolution (SVGA).

A high-speed WiFi connection allows for seamless access to popular online photo websites and other Internet resources. It also enables software and firmware upgrades to add functional enhancements and multiply the multimedia formats supported by the photoframe.

And since we've mentioned multimedia formats, it's important to note that high resolution photos, music and videos can also be loaded to the digital photo frame via USB cable, USB flash drives or high-capacity SD cards up to 16GB. Practically, the AF5080W works with anything from JPEG, GIF, PNG, WMF photos (which can be viewed with multiple animation options) to video formats from the latest reflex digital cameras (MJPEG, MPEG4, H.264 and more). Moreover, the device can also play music files (MP3 and AAC) while displaying photos.

"The AF5080W photoframe represents an important achievement derived from our strategic collaboration with Freescale," said Patrick Sevian, CEO of Sagem Communications. "The maturity of the i.MX31 multimedia processor and its Linux environment shortened development cycles and enabled creation of a decidedly differentiated product."

Unfortunately, Sagem has provided no pricing or availability details regarding the upcoming AF5080W model, but it seems that the device will first arrive on the European markets, with the rest of the world to follow shorty.
