Users can either re-activate the plug-in manually, or download a new version

Apple has announced that Safari 5.1.7 for OS X Lion and Safari 5.1.7 for OS X Snow Leopard will disable out-of-date versions of Adobe Flash Player, once installed.

The reason behind Apple’s radical decision stems from the fact that “out-of-date versions of Adobe Flash Player do not include the latest security updates and will [thus] be disabled to help keep your Mac secure,” according to an advisory by the Cupertino, California-based computer giant.

The Mac maker further explains that, should the new Safari stumble upon outdated versions of Adobe’s platform, you will be greeted by a dialog informing you that Flash Player has been disabled automatically for your protection.

Apple’s thoughtful software engineers decided it would be appropriate to provide an option to visit Adobe and download an updated version, therefore they included it in the dialog. Users who find that it is imperative to re-activate their old Flash player implementation can follow Apple’s instructions in KB article HT5271.
