Safari 3.2 Is a Crash FrenzyFix needed ASAP |
|
| |
Hours after Apple's release of Safari 3.2, Apple Discussions was filled with complaints from users who updated the browser to the latest version. 80 percent of the users are reporting issues with the update, particularly with the anti-phishing feature, which crashes the browser once every few minutes. However, the original problem seems to be incompatibility with third-party software. PatrickL notes
that Safari crashed on him “five times in 20 minutes,” pointing out to the new security tweaks as being the main problem. “...I turned off the new anti-phishing feature and it works fine,” says Patrick. “I was logged into my company's Exchange email, GMail and Yahoo! No nefarious website, whatsoever, and it was crashing all over the place.” User mikelouw chimes in saying “I can't even force quit. Whole computer freezes and I have to power down. Just like windows.” Good comparison there...! He goes on explaining that, while he doesn't have any Internet plugins apart from Flash, “when I turn off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website,' the crashing stops.” Disappointed, he realizes that “the main reason for the update is unusable.” Needless to say, other users' comments on the official Apple Discussions forum sound pretty much the same. Furthermore, most of the posters reporting issues with Safari 3.2 appear to be hard-core users of third-party add-ons. One user is particularly decided to drop a line, to teach some sense into anxious Mac users who install an update the moment it becomes available. “I am quite a serious computer user and Safari user,” nerowolfe says, adding that he never installs an update “the instant it comes out. As a serious user, I wait and watch first,” he writes. Of course, without those who immediately install an update and report the issues afterwards, users like nerowolfe would be forced to do the same, while Apple wouldn't be able to deliver a fix in the shortest time possible. How's your experience after updating to the new version of the browser?

| Comment #1 by: VA on 14 Nov 2008, 16:40 GMT | reply to this comment | I've tried all the repairs suggested by Mac FixIt -- turned off fraudulent website, cleaned the cache files, and removed the contents of the Safari files in the library folder. Nothing has made a difference, and it crashes the instant I try to open a window. My productivity today is shot. |
| Comment #2 by: Eric Shelton on 14 Nov 2008, 20:42 GMT | reply to this comment | Great article. I've had 4 crashes within 30 minutes of 3.2. This is ridiculous. My plugins are APPLE products like QuickTime and iPhoto something. Switching back to Firefox, and very disappointed with Apple. Didn't buggering up the MobileMe launch teach them about releasing stuff too soon? |
| Comment #3 by: Woody on 14 Nov 2008, 22:36 GMT | reply to this comment | Works like brand new fast if not faster than before. |
| Comment #4 by: KA on 14 Nov 2008, 23:20 GMT | reply to this comment | Terrible. If it's crashing once every seven minutes you're doing well.
It's crashed lots of times, but only once was there any information in the console:

| Comment #5 by: Kevin on 15 Nov 2008, 14:44 GMT | reply to this comment | Crashing for me too, it got so bad I had to switch to Firefox until they get a fix out. |
| Comment #6 by: Peter Morgan on 15 Nov 2008, 18:59 GMT | reply to this comment | No crashes with 3.2 on two different macs, only odd plugin installed is Inquisitor, and usual flip4mac and flash etc. type standard plugins. Leopard 10.5.5 |
| Comment #7 by: Dutta on 16 Nov 2008, 13:39 GMT | reply to this comment | I had issue with older versions as well ....I relied on 3.2 but it is poorer... I am using webkit for now as a bypass. |
| Comment #8 by: Wingsy on 16 Nov 2008, 17:08 GMT | reply to this comment | I've had it running from the moment it came out, and I've been to dozens of websites. Not even a hiccup. What's going on here? |
| Comment #9 by: Justin on 16 Nov 2008, 20:48 GMT | reply to this comment | I have a stock install of leopard 10.5.5, safari crashes opening apple's home page, looks like a double release in processing the java vm plugin.
This is very unfortunate but perhaps indicative of how thinly stretched engineering is at apple. Not nearly enough testing.
Thank goodness for firefox. |
| Comment #10 by: Keith Lucas on 17 Nov 2008, 13:08 GMT | reply to this comment | Just installed 3.2 and it crashed as soon as I tried to re-open the previous session (via the history tab). Otherwise it works for about 10 minutes then crashes. I have uninstalled Growl and removed AcidSearch, I have unchecked the Fraudulent Sites box... it still fails! I am going back to the much improved Firefox until this is sorted. Without Acid Search Safari is, frankly, eclipsed by Firefox anyway! |
| Comment #11 by: Durry on 17 Nov 2008, 23:39 GMT | reply to this comment | my safari crashes all the time, i needed to download the firefox trough azureus, safari wont let me with the crashes
also i was using safari right now and it did crash WTF |
| Comment #12 by: pappu on 18 Nov 2008, 08:27 GMT | reply to this comment | I installed it yesterday and since from that it started crashing. It is ridiculous and boring. So I guess I wont install it until it gets fixed by apple people.Earlier versions were fantastic but I was completely disappointed by apple's new release. |
| Comment #13 by: Milkman on 19 Nov 2008, 02:17 GMT | reply to this comment | It works fine for me. Installed first thing this morning, and have been using it all day for development and it hasn't missed a beat.
I have never installed any plugins for Safari. Everyone I have seen that has problems are using some screwball third party plugin... |
| Comment #14 by: Dr. Howard on 19 Nov 2008, 19:43 GMT | reply to this comment | Multiple crashes for any simple task...If a Flas player is embedded, or other video, this will tend to crash Safari. I'm using Tiger 10.4.11 on a dual 1Ghz Quicksilver G4..
Previous version worked flawlessly... I'm hoping for a quick fix from Apple on this..

| Comment #15 by: Jan Willem on 19 Nov 2008, 20:14 GMT | reply to this comment | Safari 3.2 works well on my eMac PPC 1.25Ghz machine. On my iBook 500Mhz machine it crashes shortly after startup and I did not have this problem with the previous release. There is no excuse for such erratic behaviour, and I think the development team ought not to have released an 'update' such as this one. |
| Comment #16 by: Guy Wittig on 21 Nov 2008, 10:15 GMT | reply to this comment | I had constant crashes but uninstalled Acid Search as recommended in another forum and no more problems. I also saw a similar suggestion related to Pith Helmet.
So it seems it is incompatibility with some plugins - i.e. not Safari 3.2 itself

| Comment #17 by: Amanda on 25 Nov 2008, 09:38 GMT | reply to this comment | Since installing last night my macbook won't even start up. It just displays the grey screen with the apple logo and every 2 minutes or so attempts to re start again. I run a business and everything is on the computer. I am backed up with time machine and am desperate for a solution. Any help appreciated. |
| Comment #18 by: Filip Truta on 25 Nov 2008, 10:55 GMT | reply to this comment | Safari 3.2.1 is out now.

Although it doesn't promise to rid users of crashes, we're guessing this is what Apple is trying to put an end to. So far, at least one user (over at Apple Discussions) has reported than not much has changed since updating to 3.2.1, meaning the browser still crashes. However, if your MacBook doesn't even boot properly, Safari may not be your (only) problem (the problems may range from MacBook-specific firmware to overheating issues). If you do manage to start up OS X, better run that Software Update again to see if there are other updates to install. |
| Comment #19 by: nikki on 03 Dec 2008, 03:45 GMT | reply to this comment | Just downloaded 3.2.1 and it is continuously crashing. i get about 5-10 minutes of online time, then it will crash 3-4 times, then open up and it starts all over again. i wish i still had 3.2 and i am looking for it to download. |
| Comment #20 by: Shirley on 23 Dec 2008, 05:08 GMT | reply to this comment | I'm on 3.2.1 and it crashes every few minutes. This is ridiculous!!! |
| Comment #21 by: Marion on 04 Jan 2009, 03:17 GMT | reply to this comment | I just opened Safari 3.2.1 on the google page and within minutes my CPU goes on overdrive, Safari stop to respond. the I need force quit Safari and all is well again. My question is how do I go back to my previous version of Safari. I often check work in several browser even though I use Firefox mostly version 2 as I am wary to update to their version 3, as Safari turned out to be so unusable. |
| Comment #22 by: AZ on 16 Jan 2009, 09:26 GMT | reply to this comment | Due to constant crashing of SAfari 3.2.1 I am switching browsers.
WHat a pity Apple. Another lost chance!!! |
