Apple's Discussion boards, the place to cry on someone's shoulder when Mac OS X native (and not only) programs go berserk, is again filled with
complaints following a software update release from Apple. Apparently, Macs get stuck on the installing updates pane or freeze at "configuring installation" slow page loading following a "successful"
Safari 3.1.1 installation. Mac users also claim web clip problems and even problems accessing specific sites, MacFixIt
reports.
loontoon writes on Apple's Discussion boards: "So I downloaded the 3.1.1 update from Software Update and it prompted me to restart. Problem is, the process gets stuck on the installing updates pane and stays there without restarting. I waited a full 30 minutes and the progress bar never moved," adding that he performed a hard shut down, restarted his Mac and found that Safari simply wouldn't open anymore. Anyone else experiencing the same issue?
Another unsatisfied Mac owner and upset Safari user posts his complaints, this time on MacFixIt's web site, accusing freezing issues at "configuring installation." Here's what he says: "Using software update, I dutifully clicked on the 'restart' button, and Leopard went through its attempt to update with nothing else on the screen other than the install dialog. But it froze at 'configuring installation'. After waiting 20 minutes, I force rebooted and tried again. Same thing. And now after restarting, neither my old Safari, nor my nightly Webkit download will launch at all."
There's a possible fix to this, however, as MacFixIt themselves note, and that is to download Apple's standalone Safari as re-applying an installation can resolve problems such as application launch failure.
Other issues emerging after installing Apple's latest version of Safari include problems using Web Clip after the update, problems accessing certain web sites that were previously accessible. Mac users should note that some Leopard and Tiger versions require their own Safari 3.1.1 update.
