The distribution that bears the name of an Italian dessert, Sabayon Linux, has launched its
x86/x86-64 1.1 Professional Edition. What does this version offer? Read on and you'll find out!
The live booting is three times faster thanks to
the developers' OpenGL configuration tool. After you boot up the distribution, you'll see KDE 3.5.7 at work. If you need some Windows applications to be run on Sabayon, you can use Wine 0.9.47 to start them as they were usual Linux applications.
Sabayon 1.1 Professional Edition is powered by the 2.6.23.1 Linux kernel with the addition of rt2x00 tree patches for more wireless drivers support and latest acpi patches for support on Fujitsu laptops. Nopaste, git and cogito were added and KNetworkManager was updated. Some of the problems related to agp gart on x86 and those about sound were solved.
NVidia video drivers were updated to 100.14.19 and those for ATI are now version 8.40.4. The artwork was modified to match the latest art changes on Sabayon style.
On the productivity side, you will have OpenOffice version 2.2.1, so you can create professional documents fast and easy. Do you want to try a different operating system without uninstalling the actual one? The developers from Sabayon thought about virtualization, so they added Innotek VirtualBox OSE. Many other packages were added, but you will have to get the distribution and see for yourself what the Sabayon has to offer!
Sabayon is based on Gentoo (and 100% compatible with it) and the package manager used is the same as on Gentoo, Portage. It holds the records of all the ebuilds available for download and install. The distribution's philosophy is based on two simple statements: 1.
OOTB (
Out
Of
The
Box)
Functionalities and 2.
KISS:
Keep
It
Simple
Stupid! The distribution can be used by everyone, from the Linux newbie to the kernel hacker, as developers say.
