Developers leveraging Microsoft’s SQL Server Driver for PHP should make sure to use the latest release, as version 1.1 was deprecated. The Microsoft Download Center now features an updated page for v1.1 of the driver under the following title SQL Server Driver for PHP 1.1 - October 2009 – Deprecated.

Essentially, what this means is that the Redmond company has cut access to SQL Server Driver for PHP 1.1 altogether.

Developers need to adapt and embrace the most recent version of the driver, which is also offered by the software giant free of charge as was the case for its predecessor. The updated SQL Server Driver for PHP 1.1 download page now offers SQL Server Driver for PHP 2.0.

The change was announced over a month ago by Jonathan Guerin, Program Manager PHP Driver for SQL Server: “With our release of the PHP Driver for SQL Server 2.0 driver last year, we are planning to remove download links to the PHP Driver for SQL Server 1.1 May 31st 2011.”

It appears that even though the company missed the deadline by a few days, it still managed to make SQL Server Driver for PHP 2.0 the only version available to devs.

“The PHP Driver for SQL Server 2.0 release includes the Native APIs present in the PHP Driver for SQL Server 1.1 release, as well as support for the PDO API,” Guerin stated in April 2011.

“Moving forward, the existing PHP Driver for SQL Server 1.1 download page will redirect to the PHP Driver for SQL Server 2.0 page. Please contact us if there are any compatibility issues you come across and we will work hard to resolve these.”

The introduction of support for PDO with a new PDO_SQLSRV driver in SQL Server Driver for PHP 2.0 is just one of the enhancements that the latest release of the driver brings to the table.
