After the first service pack for SQL Server 2008 was made available earlier this month, Microsoft is now providing the first cumulative update package designed to refresh the release. Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 is offered as a hotfix for this specific milestone of the Redmond company's data platform. According to the search giant, CU1 is designed to provide hotfixes introduced for SQL Server 2008 when the product was still in pre-SP1 stage, items that were not integrated into the service pack.

“Keep your system up to date with the most recent cumulative update package for SQL Server 2008 SP1. This package is only intended for customers who are going to be upgrading from SQL Server 2008 CU#4 to SP1. You will have to install this CU after upgrading to SP1 release to get all the fixes. SQL Server SP1 CU1 does not contain any additional fixes other than the ones already addressed with SQL Server 2008 CU#4 and is only intended as a post Service Pack upgrade rollup for SQL Server 2008 CU#4 customers only,” revealed Mauricio Monico, program manager, SQL Server Sustained Engineering.

Microsoft explained that the release of Cumulative Update 4 for SQL Server 2008 RTM delivered a range of hotfixes that were not integrated into the Service Pack 1 package. This is where Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2008 SP1 comes in, as it provides all the resolves from CU4. In this regard, the Redmond company indicated that CU1 for SQL Server 2008 SP1 should only be regarded as a post-service pack rollup for Cumulative Update 4.

The software giant emphasized that CU1 brought nothing new to the table on top of what was already offered with CU4. “No new hotfixes have been included in this cumulative update other than the hotfixes that were already released in Cumulative Update 4,” Microsoft added.
