On Tuesday, leading mobile applications designer SPB Software has announced the release of SPB TV for Maemo, the first ever mobile TV solution for this mobile operating system to be included in the Ovi Store.

With the new release, all owners of a Maemo-based mobile phone are offered the possibility to enjoy the advantages of the mobile TV on their devices, while also benefiting from a leveraged user experience and rich functionality.

“The application is remarkable due to its TV-like usability that allows users to watch TV on their mobile devices as if it was their TV at home,” the software developer notes.

According to the company, the new application comes with fast access to a number of over 150 channels from over 20 countries, while offering features like channel preview, or the possibility to watch TV while on low speed mobile network connections.

Some of the other features that the new application comes to the market with include picture-in-picture mode, through which users view a preview picture of a selected channel simultaneously with having the main channel playing in full screen.

One of the most appealing features of the new software solution is the fact that it was made available for download for free via the Ovi Store. The application is ad supported, though the ads would be displayed only at times when the channel is buffering.

“We aim to bring SPB TV to every mobile device and provide users with the opportunity to watch mobile TV for free no matter what kind of phone they have,” Vassili Philippov, COO of SPB Software, stated.

“The release of SPB TV for Maemo and Nokia N900 devices helps us to cover one more platform and make SPB TV available for more than 99% of mobile devices on the market.”

SPB TV already enjoys a number of more than 2 million users, and is available on a range of mobile platforms, including Andoid, bada, BlackBerry, iPhone/iPad, Symbian, Windows Mobile and WebOS.

Some of the main features of the new SPB TV for Maemo application include:

Full Screen TV player with picture-in-picture mode Unique TV browser with fast channel launching and switching A wide selection of public live TV channels Integrated TV Guide with a list of current and upcoming TV shows On-screen control panel Video quality switcher Advanced Video Codec support

Those owners of a Maemo-based mobile phone interested in downloading the new application should head over to the Ovi Store to search for it.
