SPB Software, the mobile developer behind the popular SPB Mobile Shell application, has recently announced that it has released a major update for the SPB TV for BlackBerry app, bringing it to version 2.0. It seems that the devs decided to offer SPB TV 2.0 as a free download without requiring any subscription fee.

Even though the application will be ad-supported, all included ads will be displayed only during the channel buffering time

SPB TV has already been launched for all mobile platforms currently available, except on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. Thanks to its availability on Windows Mobile, Symbian, iOS, Android, Maemo, bada, webOS and Blackberry, SPB TV had reached around 3 million users by January 2011.

According to the developer, the application has become popular among users due to its high-quality mobile TV interface.

One of the new features available with SPB TV 2.0 for Blackberry is the video on demand (VOD) option. In addition, the Advanced Video Codec (H.264) support improves video quality. As a result, picture quality is improved, even at lower bitrates.

Some of the existing features of the application include: a catalogue with more than 150 channels in over 20 languages, unique TV browser with quick channel previews, a TV guide with the list of current and upcoming TV shows, as well as fast channel launch and switching.

SPB TV is also available on Android, bada, iPhone/iPad, Symbian, Maemo, Windows Mobile and WebOS smartphones as well as on feature phones.

Furthermore, the developer offers SPB TV as a solution for mobile operators, by allowing them to combine the application with their own infrastructure and various subscription models.

SPB TV 2.0 for Blackberry is available now as a free download from Softpedia. The application is compatible with all devices that run BlackBerry OS 4.3 or later.
