14 DAY TRIAL // The Japanese tech giant SONY released its new VAIO E Series 14P line of notebooks on Tuesday, on its official website. It may not be an UltraBook but it’s a small and powerful little toy.
It is a 14” model with a DVD optical drive included that weighs 5.07 pounds. That is 2.29 kilograms in standard metrics, and this is another reason it can’t be called an UltraBook.
The design is quite nice. It has a tight chassis with a highlighted color wrapping around the edges, and a colored speaker bezel on top of the machine.
The color is the same with the backlighting of the keyboard and the large trackpad.
The platform is powered by Intel’s Core i3-2350M processor, which is based on Sandy Bridge microarchitecture packing two cores with Hyper-Threading, enabled onto a 988-pin FCPGA10 G2 Socket.
The CPU has 3 megabytes of Level 2 cache and can address a maximum of 16 GB of DDR3 memory that can be partly shared by the HD 3000 iGPU.
The maximum heat dissipation is rated at 35 watts when all 4 threads are fed with heavy tasks.
It only comes with 4GB of DDR3 RAM from SONY and also has a 500GB 5400rpm HDD, along with a DVD.
The graphics part is serviced by an AMD Radeon HD 7670M graphics card using a dedicated 1GB or VRAM.
On the connectivity side, the VAIO E Series 14P is well endowed with two USB 3.0 ports out of which one is capable of cell phone charging even with the notebook turned off.
There are also two more USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI connector and a WiFi adapter complete with Bluetooth 4.0+HS.
The interesting part is the 1.3 megapixel Exmor HD webcam that, through the use of special software, will allow you to control by hand gestures a finite set of applications like Windows Media Player, IE9, PowerPoint and PowerDVD.
If you rotate your hand, you can also increase or decrease the volume.
