One of the leading executives of the gaming industry has suggested that those executives who do not play video games should not be involved with them.

John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment, admits to Edge, “I really play. I’m in a Null-sec corp, the whole bit. The games I’m playing right now are Planetside 2, Dota 2 and Eve.”

“Eve used to be the forefront game, but now it’s the background game because I don’t have a choice, I’m having too much fun in Planetside 2. And Dota 2 I’m playing a lot with my kids right now,” he also says.

He then argues that “In my opinion, people that don’t play games have no business in this business. It should be the gamers-only club, I think. I can’t stand people that don’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to playing these things,”

Smedley has previously revealed that much of the core gameplay features of the upcoming Planetside 2 were inspired by CCP’s EVE Online.

Planetside 2 is at the moment in beta stage and SOE has said that the game might be officially launched before the end of the year, but that a delay is also a possibility as long as the team working on it feels the game experience can be improved.

The game will use a free-to-play business model and Sony Online Entertainment plans to make all its future titles available to anyone who is interested in playing them.

Microtransactions and VIP level subscriptions will be used to generate revenue for the company.

Planetside 2 is a mix between the MMO and the first-person shooter that will allow players to use their own skill in order to defeat enemies.

Gamers will need to team up with other players in order to have a solid change of conquering and holding in-game property.
