The UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) has issued a warning regarding a ransomware scam that leverages the agency’s name and reputation to increase its chances of success.

Judging by SOCA’s advisory, the ransomware is “classic.” It locks up victims’ computers and demands the payment of a so-called fine in order to have the device unlocked.

“In reality, the computer has been infected with malicious software (malware), disseminated by cyber criminals for financial gain,” the advisory reads.

“SOCA will never contact members of the public and demand money in this way. Anyone contacted in this manner should never pay any money, and should seek immediate advice on removing the malware from reputable computer specialists,” the agency warns.

SOCA advises members of the public who fall victim to such malware attacks to file a report with Action Fraud.
