SME Server 9.0 Beta 4, a simple, powerful, and secure Linux server for networking and communications for small and medium enterprises, has been released and is ready for testing.

SME Server 9.0 Beta 4 is based on CentOS 6.5 and contains a lot of improvements, changes, and new features, which is to be expected from a distribution that is still under heavy development.

“The SME Server development team is pleased to announce the release of SME Server 9.0 Beta 4 which is based on CentOS 6.5. This is the final planned Beta of SME Server 9.0. This version has the latest openssl to avoid the heartbleed issue. Bug reports and reports of potential bugs should be raised in the bug tracker (and only there, please),” said the developers in the official announcement.

As it was to be expected, the Heartbleed bug has affected many Linux server distributions out there and the developers have been trying to fix the problems. The SME Server team has been somewhat fortunate, because its operating system is still under development, which means that the new version with the bug didn’t arrive in too many hands.

The SME Server 9.0 developers still have some work ahead of them, but they did manage to get a lot of things done so far. For example, the installer has been substantially modified and updated, the remaining relevant patches from SME Server 8 have been ported, the Workstation Backup no longer excludes dar files by default in line with the console backup, the text in the Backup panel has been updated, and a choice to delete old backup before or after backup has been added.

Also, a template for wide links has been added, support for Windows 8 domain joining & user login has been added, the ability to configure waiting for network Win7 registry option has been added, and the Mail Server has received a number of improvements. And these are just a few of the fixes and changes that you will find in the new version.

SME Server is the leading Linux distribution for small and medium enterprises. It is brought to you by Koozali Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation that exists to provide marketing and legal support for SME Server. SME Server is freely available under the GNU General Public License and is only possible through the efforts of the community.

A complete changelog can be found in the official announcement. You can download SME Server 9.0 Beta 4 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
