At least in the United States and in Canada where SLAM is currently available, with International availability in the works. Social Location Annotation Mobile is a project fostered by the Microsoft Research
Community Technologies Group marking a collaboration with the Microsoft Photo and Imaging eXperience (PIX) team.
"
SLAM is prototype social software for communicating and sharing with groups of friends and family, primarily on mobile devices. SLAM enables lightweight, group-centric real-time broadcast communication and coordination, location awareness and instant group photo-sharing", reads the mobile device-based application's description.
SLAM itself is free, provided you can receive an invitation to a group, but this comes with a catch. A phone bill of in excess of $600. This because the messages are transferred via the data pipe, using HTTP and a server. There are, of course, special offers to limit the size of the bill, but I will not go into details.
"The core concept behind Slam is a "Slam", a group of people with whom you can exchange messages and photos. When you send a message in Slam, it is automatically sent to everyone in the group to which you sent it. For smartphone users that have the Slam client installed, their phone will buzz and they will have an indication on their phone's home screen that there is a new message. For SMS users, they will receive the message as an SMS from the Slam server. Like smartphone users, SMS users can be members of multiple slam groups. SMS users will send / receive messages to a different phone number for each slam group they a member of," the product is further described.
