CounterPath Corporation, a provider of desktop and mobile VoIP (voice over IP) software solutions, has released a highly secure, standards-based VoIP application that works over both 3G and Wi-Fi networks. It’s called Bria iPhone Edition and it works not only with the iPhone, but also with the iPod touch and iPad. The app costs four bucks.

According to the people at CounterPath, their app is 100% compatible with devices running iOS 3.0 and later, and even supports the upcoming iOS 4. The CounterPath softphone client takes advantage of a growing number of small and medium-sized enterprises, large enterprises and governments that are deploying Apple portables for their staff. These people require full access to their communications services while away from their desk or office, CounterPath claims, and its Bria iPhone Edition should address this need quite well, by leveraging the iPhone's native address book and its embedded Bluetooth technology.

Bria iPhone Edition boasts key features like Full SIP compliance, superior call quality, an intuitive UI, DTMF and Bluetooth support, multi-call management options, signaling and call encryption, and customized branding available for enterprises and telephony providers, although the last one is just optional.

"The new Bria iPhone Edition is what a VoIP softphone should be for the Apple iOS family of devices," Todd Carothers, vice president of product management, CounterPath, said. "Our customers have asked us to provide a high-quality solution for the mobile device market, and Bria iPhone Edition meets that challenge. As the leading SIP-based softphone for the desktop, we leveraged our experience to release a product that has been built with both the consumer and enterprise customer in mind."

"There are already more than 75 million iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad owners today who can potentially use our Bria iOS softphone," Carothers said. "This release is another milestone in bringing the Bria experience to a wider range of mobile devices. Within the next six months, we'll add versions offering even more features and support for additional mobile operating systems, further extending Bria's reach into the massively growing mobile market."
