The team at video game publisher SEGA that’s in charge of the Sonic franchise says that the newly announced Boom content represents a bold experiment that’s designed to introduce some innovation to the classic series.

CVG quotes Stephen Frost, a producer, as saying that, “You see franchises that have been around for a long time go through this process where they look to explore other opportunities, that's what this is. It's a really great, bold move on Sega's part. It's a very brave move.”

Sonic Boom is set to re-design all the core characters of the universe and introduces new mechanics that are set to attract a number of new players.

The universe will include an official video game, toys and an animated television series.
